Time for the Holidays

It's December 1st.  That means only 24 days until Christmas!  I am very excited about the holidays and for taking G home to celebrate with my family.  I just love home at this time of the year, and how the house smells like pine!

We will also be celebrating Jamie's 30th birthday, so that is exciting!  Sadly, she found out accidentally that it was going to be a surprise, but it will still be a party!  She officially turns 30 on January 5th, but we decided to do it a little earlier.  Too bad she found out about the surprise, but now Greg won't have to be so sly!

No trip home is complete in the winter without a stop at Bristol Mountain.  A day with skiing is a must while I am home.  I miss the slopes so much!  Hopefully a few friends will be able to join us on Christmas Eve day.  Nothing like skiing all day, then going home to eating really good food and desserts.

I'm counting down the days until I am home.  21 days left.

My Parent's Lab is a Little Dramatic

So it is 10:30 pm and I'm sitting in the pet ER. I never would have thought that on my second day home, this is where I'd be. I'm trying to give dad some support, as his baby, the 85-90 pound lab, Moose, is being checked out. Apparently he got into something in the woods and has been drooling like a fat kid on Halloween. I guess drooling is a sign of nausea, and after puking up his dinner 4 hours after eating it, it is cause for concern.

Anyway, Moose had the vitals check up, including a thermometer up his rump, plus a finger up his rump soon after. The face of him was classic. Hilarious and good to know dogs hate rectal exams as much as humans. Now he is being knocked out on reversible anesthesia to check out his bowels. The vet is also running some chemical check to make sure he didn't ingest poison, or something similar.

This is Dad while his dog is being checked out. Not worried, right? Moose will be fiiiine. Actually, Dad's had an extremely long day, work starts at like 6am for him. But right before he fell asleep like a kid, he was up worrying. He tried to engage me in a 2 player game of Word Mole for BlackBerry, but we couldn't figure out how to actually get it to play 2 player. Good thing I brought my Nook to keep me company while he's snoring over there.

Random thought of the night: At age 6 and 9 my parents threw Jamie (sister) and I a Halloween party in Honeoye. Everyone who was anyone at that age was invited. We had a bob for apples barrel. Only right this second am I realizing how nasty that water must have been. Slobber, snot, and Halloween face paint; couldn't be a worse combination.

$471 and some "dietary indiscretion", Moose is heading home. A sigh and tear of relief makes my Daddy much happier!!

Autumn is Here!

Fall starts this Friday, September 23rd!  I am so excited, I love this time of the year.  I can't wait to bring out the Halloween decorations, determine what my costume may be, buy candy for my first ever trick-or-treaters, go to hayrides, get lost in a corn maze, carve pumpkins, and lastly, prepare myself for bar exam results (which will be posted on October 28).  I also am headed home to NY for a little less than a week to see my family!  It's been since June since I've stepped foot on Northern soil, and I miss it!

I hope that Augusta has a lot of Halloween festivities to offer.  I know nothing can really compare to the Macon "Thriller" dance or to Rochester's Haunted Hayrides, but a girl can hope, can't she?  I've actually heard rumors that Le Chat Noir holds a really cool Zombie Bootcamp.  I think I will definitely be begging a few friends to go try this out before Halloween hits.

There's also the Augusta Westobou Festival going on for the last week in September and first week of October.  There are a bunch of cool, free events going on, and I plan on attending some!  Hopefully a few are dog friendly!  I'll have to research that one, because Buster and Timber deserve an outing or two at times.

Where will you be when Zombie Apocalypse hits?

Labor Day Weekend, Nascar Fail

Belts make awesome beer holders
Labor Day!  4 days to do whatever we want and we took advantage of it!  We started the weekend by heading to Macon on Friday to retrieve some of our things from our places!  We had dinner at the new Margaritas at Mercer Village with Ed.  It's such a cool little area they've got over there near campus, it was nice to see how much they've done!  Garon made sure to get a drink, as it was the closest to "drinking on campus" lawfully as he could get.  We then went to the KA house for some bid-day festivities and finished off the night by heading home to Augusta.  It was a long day, but fun to be back in Macon for a short time.  Now we just need some tenants for both of our places and we'll be happy!
Monkey Wrench
Saturday we spent the day getting ready for the first UGA game by doing chores around the house and getting groceries.  Sadly, the Dawgs lost, but we had delicious homemade chicken wings, tots, and spinach dip for dinner.  Fall has definitely arrived because football is finally here!  This coming weekend we are headed to the home opener in Athens, Dawgs v. Gamecocks!  So excited!

On Sunday we headed to Atlanta Motor Speedway for the NASCAR race.  My first ever!  I was so excited to see what it was all about, tailgating, people watching, rednecking, watching the cars, I was pumped!  We got there around 3pm and the race wasn't supposed to start until 7:30, so we had plenty of time to tailgate and walk around to all of the vendors.  It started to rain around 5:30, so sadly we were stuck under the tent.  We decided to grill hots and hamburgers, but geniuses that we are, we forget condiments, so we ate everything wish chips as our condiment.  As it rained though, we worried the entire time if the race was going to be cancelled.  We missed the flyover because we were still trying to avoid the rain, but eventually headed into the gates.

Atlanta Motor Speedway
Finally the rain stopped, so we headed to our seats, turn 3, with our coolers and the attitude that the race was going to happen.  We sat there for over an hour, waiting for the trucks to dry the tracks.  It was about 15 minutes from start time, and hey, what do you know, the tropical storm decided to piss rain on us even more, this time in a downpour.  The officials finally cancelled the race, for Tuesday, which we were unable to make, and we decided to head home.  It was a NASCAR fail, but I hope to go back another time because I wanted to enjoy everything about it.  We still had a pretty great time though, and it was fun spending the day doing something different!

Monday we recovered and went over to a friend's house to try dove for dinner.  I cannot complain, I'd definitely try it again!  Overall, it was a fun Labor Day weekend!  Looking forward to the next!

Happy Birthday!

Happy Birthday to my little brother Jared!  He turns 22 today!  I can't believe he is becoming so old!  That only means that I am getting older too!
Happy Birthday!

Weekend Update from Augusta

When my sister Jamie told me she was going to come visit me in my new hometown, Augusta, I was elated.  I couldn't wait for her to get here, as it had been since graduation in May that I last saw her.  Much had changed from May in Macon, to August in Augusta.

Upon arrival, I tried to show her around my new town, but alas, I didn't know my way around my new town!  Luckily, I had rode in the car many times with others driving around Augusta, so I had faint recollections about where I was going.  We decided to attend the Augusta Greenjackets game for Thirsty Thursday, where there are $1 drafts.  Our whole evening was a mere $10 for drinks and the ballgame, as neither of us were able to drink too much.
Spotted at the Greenjackets game!

Friday morning I was at an interview for a potential job (fingers crossed!) and the afternoon was spent at the Augusta Mall.  That evening we decided that The Chophouse was where we were going to eat for dinner, and it was delicious!  I had the prime rib and I was not disappointed!  That evening we picked up the local Metrospirit paper to see what was going on around town.  We decided to head to Stillwater for some drinks and left before it got too busy, but unluckily for us, we caught the torrential downpour!

We woke up relatively early the next morning in order to go to the Augusta Market located on 8th Street and the Riverwalk.  After scoping out what the market had to offer, we walked on the Riverwalk where we saw the local paddlerace on the Savannah River.  There were some homemade rafts and it was entertaining to watch the rafts try to reach the finish line.  Upon returning to the market, we decided that we were going to cook dinner at home that evening and picked up some homegrown zucchini and squash for $2, which cooked up more than enough for 3 people that evening.  Just before leaving we made sure to pick up some homemade lemonade to quench our thirst.  It was only $2 for a solo cup which had the perfect blend of sugar, water, and lemons.  Afterwards we walked up Broad Street and caught lunch at Blue Sky Kitchen.  We decided to finish the day with walking around Surrey Center and checking out the local boutiques, which all were very cute stores.

I hoped that my sister enjoyed her time in Augusta!  I know I enjoyed having her here and look forward to many more visits.  It was nice to explore my new city with someone else who didn't know anything about it either.  My boyfriend joined us for the Saturday excursions.  He's from Augusta but hasn't lived here in seven years, so the experience was just as fun for him as it was for us.  Come back soon Jamie!

LTG

There are so many stories I’d like to share about Lauren Giddings.  She is one of my best friends and I could not have survived law school without her.

The first night I met Lauren, a group of brand new law students sat inside her tiny apartment across from the law school.  We didn’t know each other at all and at the time we had no idea that we all would become an inseparable group.  We had no idea that despite distance, we’d remain a close knit family in the future.  I remember that night, we went out to an upperclassmen’s party and eventually ended up downtown at various watering holes.  Lauren was decked out in pink, clearly her favorite color, and I thought that I was meeting Elle from Legally Blonde.  Lauren even had her tiny lapdog Butterbean greeting us at her apartment.  Lauren told me that Butterbean was named after the country song by Kevin Fowler.  Lauren had bought Butterbean while living in Lubbock, Texas.  Butterbean soon became our family as much as Lauren did; he attended every intramural game, even every get together, and was a prominent fixture on Lauren’s lap.

I soon learned that Lauren would become one of those law school friends that older attorneys had told me about.  The advice I had received from attorneys before going to law school was the same: Don’t go to law school, but if you do, know that you’ll leave there with friendships that will last a lifetime.  I had no idea what that advice had meant at the time, but reflecting back, I now know exactly what they were talking about.  Law school was hard, but the friends that you gain in this journey are precious.  Lauren was one of those precious friends, someone who would be there for you no matter what, and made our group of friends a family. Although Lauren has left us early, I can honestly say that she is the friend that is binding us together, the glue that made us a family and that will keep us a family forever.

With Lauren being from Maryland and me from New York, we instantly formed a bond, the Yankees, attending law school in the South.  She had lived here much longer than I had, but she took it upon herself to show me what the South was about.  Lauren had planned a group trip to the Georgia National Fair, where I watched my first pig race and saw all the dairy cows on display.  She also took me to my first Braves baseball game, the first major league game I’d ever been to.  She made sure that I experienced Atlanta as well, showing me around town and brought a good time wherever we went.

Lauren loved country and bluegrass music.  She’d always be planning which shows we would catch at the Hummingbird, the Capital Theatre, or even Whiskey River; she was always in the know as to which acts were going to be in town and would try to get the whole group to attend.  She told me once that she had not changed her radio station in months, and I believed her because every time I rode in her car it was tuned to the country station.

As a Hash House Harrier, Lauren took me to one of the hashes.  A group of us went to celebrate Lauren’s birthday.  I believe that it was what the Harrier’s call the Founder’s Day Hash.  Midway through the “hash”, Lauren had ditched me and I was running through the woods with a bunch of strangers who I became fast friends with, as they were my lifeline to getting to the finish.  Without them, I’d have been lost.  Another time, Lauren and I went on a hike in Juliette, and we took my dog Timber with us.  Lauren had the purpose of scoping out a trail in advance, as it was her duty to lay the trail on the next hash.  We’d hiked for 3 hours trying to figure out this trail, it was overgrown, misleading and we received many bug bites.  We laughed the entire time and eventually found our way out.

We would spend countless hours laying by the pool, talking about life, what we had hoped would happen for us in the future and about our jobs.  Lauren worked in the Public Defender’s office and I was a law clerk in the District Attorney’s office.  The other law clerks would pick on us good naturedly when we would attend court and sit next to each other, as one of us would always have to be on the opposite side of where we were supposed to sit.  We’d always show up for the other in court when there was a case that’d we’d worked particularly hard on, just to sit and watch the other in action in front of the Judge.  It was exciting and it was wonderful to have my best friend in court with me, even if we were on the opposing sides of the case.  She always gave me so much courage as I faced the Judge and I admired how she never faltered up there.  She always represented her clients zealously.  She’d spend hours at a time inside the jail conducting interviews with her clients and always would make sure that she’d try to finish every interview that she’d scheduled before leaving for the day.  Lauren was proving to be a wonderful attorney.

Always one willing to plan a party, Lauren had set to the task to make sure that we would have a fun graduation party the night before graduation in May.  Lauren planned the whole thing.  She contacted the Fish’n’Pig months before graduation to reserve the room, planned the meal, and kept a count on how many of our family members would be attending.  Without her, I don’t think any of us could have planned such a great evening.  It was a perfect way to spend graduation with friends and family right before one of the most important days of our lives.  Definitely a party that I will never forget.

I can never say how much Lauren means to me, as words cannot do her memory justice.  She made all of us better people.  Anyone who knew Lauren will know that I mean.  She’s touched my life in so many ways and has made me a better person.  I will miss her always, but I know that she’ll be looking down on me from heaven.
In loving memory of Lauren Teresa Giddings
